May 10-London to Copenhagen

Shirley, Derek, and I take an Uber to the train station around 6:45 am. Shirley and I are taking the train to Heathrow and Derek is off to work. The train arrives at 7:11 and we hop on. The train is fairly empty. When we arrive at Terminal 2-3, we are busy chatting and almost miss our stop. It’s funny after we get out before the train moves off. We find SAS and get boarding passes and send our bags. We are now ready to have a bite to eat. We have muffins and a smoothie for me and a coffee for Shirley. We then go to the Duty free as Shirley wants to buy a bottle of Scotch. We get to taste a few before she buys one. We then go to another store where we try and prefer a different make. She returns the first bottle and makes a new purchase.
We sit around waiting for our gate to come up and it does about 50 min before flight time. We make our way and they start boarding not long after. The Americans in line in front of us are also going on a cruise. We are on the plane and taxi out only to sit and wait for 20-25 min or so before taking off. Shirley is sleeping before we leave the ground. After about an hour, the stewards come by serving drinks. I ask for my usual tomato juice. She hands it to me and says a price. What? I have to pay for this. Only tea, coffee, and water are free, so water it is. Shirley has a tepid coffee. The rest of the flight is fine. We arrive about 15 min late and we get in line for customs. Luckily there are two lines, EU, and a few others and then the rest of us. We have a shorter line so it goes quickly. Nancy and Barb are waiting for us at our baggage carousel. About 10 min later we both have our luggage and we  head to the Cambio to get some Krones. I give the lady 60 Euros to change. We then line up in the taxi line. We get a good size car and everything fits. We are actually farther than I thought, or the driver is extending our route. The cost is outrageous. Most of the money I took out is gone. Ah well, we have arrived. Now we need to find the key. It’s like a treasure hunt. “Find the gold racer bike among all of those in the garage, it has a plastic bag on the seat. Look under and find a black pouch. Inside the pocket find another plastic bag with the key”. Really, there must be an easier way. Luckily, I find it. We go up to the third floor and to the apartment. The cleaner is still there so we need to drop off our bags and leave. We had maps from the airport so we figure that we’ll walk to see some of the closer sites. Nancy has been having real hip and knee issues and has poles to walk with so Shirley and I have to adjust our walking from last week.
There are nice parks, lots of cyclists, and many statues and fountains. We find our way near the water,  where there is a beautiful fountain and St Alban church. We continue our walk along the water. I take a picture of the sisters in front of a huge statue of Queen Mary. We then see the Marble church and it is free to visit. Amazing! Our walk takes us to Nyhavn where there are outdoor restaurants where the customers look out onto the canal. The houses on both sides of the canal are very colourful and remind me of Amsterdam. We are getting hungry so we walk a bit more and find an upscale Mall called Le Magazin. The first restaurant we see is “Classic Pizza” so this is where we eat. They only serve pizza, fairly expensive ones. Shirley and I share one as do Nancy and Barb. Three of us have a Carlsberg beer. We then walk inside the stores and make our way to the bottom floor as there is a supermarket there, a very high end market. We each choose a made salad for tomorrow night’s supper. We pack our groceries and start walking again. We thought of taking the bus, but it get complicated to know which one, where, etc. There are no agents to speak with, just ticket machines. We end up hailing a cab. It cost us 100 DK. The driver is very nice and helpful. We asked many questions and if he didn’t know, he googled the answer.

Nyhavn. Nice hangout near the canal with restaurants.

Nyhavn

Copenhagen looks a lot like Amsterdam with people riding bikes, or seeing bikes parked everywhere.

We were back at the place around 6 pm or so. Nancy and Barb were tried as they had an overnight flight and six hour time change. We were in bed shortly after nine. It is also lighter here as we are further north. The nights are longer and the morning arrives earlier.
