April 22- Naples (Torre Annunziata)

Awake early this morning. We decide to head out for Naples on the “circumvesuviana” sort of a metro. It links Naples with Pompéi and the Amalfi coast. It cost 2,50 Euros each one way. We arrive there in about 20 minutes or so. We leave the train station and stop at a coffee place to grab a croissant while we walk. We are headed to visit an old castle called- Castel delle Ovo. On our way we hear music so we walk in that direction and discover an Easter parade of sorts.

These boys, some young men have this ritual to do.

These two complete the sequence back to back

This guy got super low.

The singer

It took a big effort to complete the task. The boys and men were quite winded shaking when they stood up

The float of the Virgin Mary

The girls just had to walk arm in arm

A video showing the feat for the boys. You can also hear the band playing.

We continued on our way.

Lots of people around the castle delle Ovo.  Free entry

Lunchtime. Line ups everywhere. We walk up a side street to see if there’s less people. We are lucky. We wait about 10 minutes for a table. Pizza time in Naples

Ron has mushroom/fungi

I have mushroom, artichoke, and ham. Ron eats the ham section. That is how it is prepared. Every ingredient has a section. I can never finish a whole pizza so it’s great for Ron.

We walk some more. We can’t believe the crowds. Every restaurant is bulging and there are long queues spilling into the streets. We manage to walk to two different market areas. The first one offered a good variety of food: cheeses, meats, pasteurisé, chocolate, breads, etc

Chocolate with pistachios, for André.

Buffalo Mozarella  (we learned that it cost more when you have it on your pizza. The servers don’t tell you that when you are ordering)

André and Wendy, in case you are having withdrawals. Pistachio and chocolate cannoli

Yummy olives

Inside a piazza, where the San Carlo Teatro is found.

We finally decide to push our luck and see if anything is open to find supper. We are, staying a little outside of Naples and it was pretty quiet here this morning and when we got back late afternoon. Sure enough, only a few bars and two gelateria are open. I would have been happy with a gelato. We eventually find a Kebab place. There a major struggle with language here. Kind of funny really. We finally order. Here is our gourmet meal for tonight.

My veggie sandwich, after a bite

Ron’s Greek pita.
We return to our place to eat. Will be an early night. Will pack and get stuff ready for the morning. Leaving on a morning train for Pompei.
