Florence April 2-5

We had quite a long day getting here. Left Moncton at 2:45 to fly to Toronto. Our flight from TO to Munich was delayed a little over an hour so hanging out in the international section of the airport were it was super congested. Our plane was. 777 so very large with 2 executive or first class sections. Guess the tickets were pretty expensive as there was no one sitting there. We had supper, which was quite good and included wine and Baileys at the end. We watched some movies, and had very short naps. Arrived in Munich around 8am, then found nice reclining chairs to wait for our 10:30 flight to Florence. It was about 20 degrees in Florence so that was a nice feeling. We decided to take the bus to the train station-Santa Maria Novella then do the 20 minute walk to our Airbnb rental. We stoopped at the Info center to grab a map but still struggled to get turned in the right direction. About 45 minutes later we make it to our destination. We find the key, but of course nothing can be that easy. We struggle for a good 5-7 minutes to get the blasted key to open the door. There were a few choice words said....
The place is good for 2 people and well hidden. It is on the south side of the Arno river, so away from the big tourists attractions and less expensive.
We are tired but I am anxious to get out to sightsee. We get a little organized and head out about 30 minutes later, so around 2:30 or so. We haven’t had anything to eat since 6 am so needless to say we are a bit hungry.
This picture was taken on Ponte Vecchio bridge

This is a picture of the Arno river that we cross to see the main sites of Florence.

We check out the #1 site which is the Duomo, SantMaria church, and tower.

                                                     The Duomo and Cathedral
                                                                      The Tower
At about 4:30, we decide that we must eat. Pizza  it is as it is everywhere. A beer and pizza each but when we get the bill there is an added 8 Euros. What? It is the service charge and a cover charge. Basically a scam for tourists.  We walk around some more and find a grocery store. We have a few things that were left for breakfast, but it really isn’t much. A few croissants in plastic wrap, some sort of crackers, some jam containers like in restaurants, coffee,  and tea. We pick up some strawberries, yogurt, and cheese. We get home around 7:30. Ron lies down and falls asleep. I take a shower and we are both fast asleep just after 8pm.

  1. Not à great start to your trip, a tourist scam upon arriving. Enjoy your travels. We are leaving early tomorrow morning .

  2. Seems to be busier than when we were there 6 years ago. Brings back good memories.

  3. We have always had some type of cover charge here, anywhere from .50 to maximum of 2.00Euro. If it is big no tip...Still not sure who gets the money, but we haven't had a service charge on top of the cover yet. We have been to one restaurant here twice now, they charge no cover, but it is the exception, and they are always busy! Have fun, and see you soon. It looks like tourist season has arrived there before it has here.
